studied theatre studies and French at the University of Vienna and completed her degree with a thesis on Samuel Beckett.
Even before graduating, she was hired as an assistant director, dramaturge and translator at festivals and theatres in Germany, and soon started working as a director. After her own translation of Molière’s Scapin the Schemer, premieres and first performances at Veit Relin’s Torturmtheater, and her first productions in Frankurt am Main, she returned to Austria where she founded the production label Theater.punkt in the late 1990s.
Ever since, she has been producing and coproducing her own projects. She also continues to accept invitations to direct at theatres in Austria and abroad.
She was appointed Aigner-Rollett Visiting Professor for Gender Research in 2006 and still teaches on occasion. She was managing director and chairwoman of the IG Freie Theaterarbeit - Austrian Association of Performing Arts - and is a member of the supervisory board of the artist cooperative Smart Coop Austria.
Sabine Mitterecker translates from French into German, preferably plays she then directs herself, writes theatrical adaptations, adapts novels and needs strong texts; they´re what make her tick. She is always seeking to make her works socially relevant and has set herself the task of supporting younger colleagues. She enjoys working with people who share her conviction that theatre – as a public space of direct interaction with the audience – has the power and the obligation to use past experiences to help us negotiate the present and shape the future.
Her productions of NICHTS SCHÖNERES and FROST were awarded the Nestroy Prize. For PUSH-UP 1-3, a coproduction with the Volkstheater under the management of Emmy Werner, the author Roland Schimmelpfennig also received a Nestroy Prize.
